Southwest Bakersfield CA Homes

The Southwest area of Bakersfield is a very popular area for newcomers and natives of Bakersfield looking to buy their first home or move up. It offers great schools, convenient shopping and much more. It is second in popularity only to the Northwest, and offers nearly as many wonderful attractions as you will find in that part of the city.  The number of parks and outdoor facilities along with 3 golf courses, the convenient Mercy Southwest Hospital, and great shopping facilities bring in visitors and new residents all the time, and it is the fastest growing section of Bakersfield. It is also headquarters to many corporate offices such State Farm Operation Center, Aera Energy, Chevron, Halliburton, and Nestle Ice Cream.

The Kern River is the northern border of Southwest Bakersfield, with Highway 5 being the area's west border. The southern border runs along Houghton Road until it intersects the east border* of Highway 99.

According to the Association of Realtors and the Bakersfield MLS, Area 51, south of Brundage lane, and between Highway 99 and Union Avenue is part of southwest Bakersfield. Most residents do not associate this area with the Southwest since it is east of the highway. Therefore, in order to keep from confusing anyone, we have decided to use Highway 99 as the dividing line for the east and west areas of Bakersfield in our search.

Parks and Recreation

Offering tennis, racquetball, basketball and picnic areas:

There are so many wonderful parks in Southwest Bakersfield.  Some of the most notable are River Walk, Riverfront, Greystone, Windsor Park, Windemere, Wilderness, and Campus Parks North and South. These are just a few of the best. If you like outdoor activities and fun things like biking trails and hiking, this is an area you'll love in Bakersfield.

Some other activities and attractions include the Bright House Networks Amphitheatre; with its outdoor concerts and location at the Park at River walk. The Kern River Parkway offers over 30 miles of bike paths through Bakersfield, where you can enjoy cycling, rollerblading, walking and jogging along the Kern River. Bakersfield Sports Village is a soccer complex that opened in July of 2011. They eventually plan to include baseball, softball and football fields.

Bakersfield Golf Courses

If you are a golfing enthusiast, you will love the courses in Southwest Bakersfield. The biggest and best is the Seven Oaks Country Club and Golf Course. This is a 27 hole Championship course designed by Robert Muir and has the reputation of being one of the most spectacular country clubs in the state of California. It is integrated with a great master planned community offering homes with views of the fairways, lakes, and greens. The Seven Oaks Country Club also offers members a pool, five-star dining, tennis, and fitness facilities. There are two other golf courses in the Southwest area. The Stockdale Country Club and Golf Course was created by 2 brothers in law that could be said to be responsible for putting Bakersfield on the map. The Sundale Country Club and Golf Course at Kern City is a retirement community and is another beautiful alternative for country club living.

Retirement and 55-Plus Communities in Southwest Bakersfield

There are two very fine senior communities in the area. The Greens at Seven Oaks offers a secured gated environment, featuring two club houses, community pool and spa, billiards, exercise room and a library.

Kern City is an independent living community featuring single family homes, many of which are located on the golf course, conveniently located close to shopping and transportation.

Area Schools

The schools in the Southwest are excellent and deserve a mention since many families are drawn to the area because of them: Stockdale High School is the most popular high school located in the southwest.
Bakersfield Christian High School is a private school also located in the southwest.
Reagan elementary is also a highly sought after school.

Also, Cal State University Bakersfield is located here in the southwest.

Shopping and Dining

The Marketplace is Bakersfield's upscale shopping area. Stores include: Olcott's, William -Sonoma, Russo's Bookstore, and other specialty stores and salons along with restaurants, Starbucks and Edwards Cinema. Casa Bella Furniture is a beautiful home store featuring one of a kind items. The Gourmet Shoppe is located next door to Café Med and offers gourmet foods and kitchen items.

The bolded neighborhoods represent some of the finest in the city of Bakersfield.

In addition to single family homes, the area has two very popular groups of Condos in Bakersfield. The Shores offers stylish condos many that are located on the man made lake, and is a very popular area. Brookside is another very popular condo complex, developed as a cute Cape Cod style community. There are actually many multi-unit properties in the Southwest for Income Property, and the single family homes are always in high demand for rentals as well.
