Bordered on the south by the Edison Highway, this area's boundaries are Union Ave to the left, the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the east, and heading into the foothills on the north. One reason for the popularity of the Northeast is the convenience to two of the state's favorite resorts:

-Lake Isabella is roughly 35 miles northeast of Bakersfield through the Kern Canyon. Activities include fishing, wind surfing, camping, hiking, boating and water skiing.

-The Alta Sierra Ski Resort is located in the Sequoia National Forest, northwest of Lake Isabella.

Northeast Bakersfield Attractions

Attractions in this part of Bakersfield are also quite impressive. We have:

-Lake Ming - A manmade lake 10 miles northeast of Bakersfield offering boating, water skiing, fishing, and sailboats are allowed at specified times.

-Hart Memorial Park - One of Kern Counties oldest parks is located 8 miles northeast of Bakersfield off Alfred Harrell Highway. Hart Park has 2 lakes with trout, catfish and bass fishing, canoe/paddleboat rentals, playgrounds and picnic facilities. Parking at the east entrance offers hiking and equestrian trails.

-The Kern River Campground - A 28 acre campsite grounds near Hart Park, CALM and Lake Ming

-The California Living Museum (also known as CALM) is a small zoo featuring animals and plants native to California. ( http://calmzoo.org )

-Multiple Parks - University Park, Siemon Park, Panarama Park, (overlooks the Kern River) and several others.  Plus the new "city in the Hills" Park will soon be completed with sport facilities, picnic areas, and grills.

-The Mesa Marin Sports Complex offers 4 lighted softball fields with bleacher seating on 15 acres. This is just the start, with future plans that include a playground, Splash pad, skate park, and a soccer complex.

Schools include Bakersfield Community College and a private Catholic high school, Garces.

There are 3 golf courses; Bakersfield Country Club, Kern River course next to Lake Ming, and the Rio Bravo Country Club.

Northeast Bakersfield Homes

Homes in the northeastern area range from beginner and rental homes under $100,000 to new tract homes, and multi-million dollar waterfront estates on the Kern River.  Special neighborhoods include:

• A fabulous gated retirement resort community called K. Hovnanian's, and the Del Webb Active Adult (55+) community.
• Rio Bravo is a gated golf course community. "City in the Hills" and Tuscany are newer neighborhoods and very popular. All three of these communities offer some magnificent views of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range.
• Alta Vista and La Cresta are charming neighborhoods with lots of personality. Homes range from Spanish style to Tudor style, dating back to the turn of the century, although most have been constructed between the 1930'S and 1940's.
• The neighborhoods of Panarama and the area around the Bakersfield Country
  club - including the neighborhood of Hillcrest - were primarily developed after the 1950's.

Some of the better known tract home builders include DR Horton, Del Webb, McMillan, and K. Hovnanian.

Although many people prefer the Southwest and Northwest Bakersfield areas for convenience, there's no denying that the Northeast offers an amazing array of attractions and neighborhoods. Many of the homes along the river are even zoned for horse farms. There are a few condos and townhomes scattered throughout as well.
