When you have spent some time investigating the homes in Bakersfield, chances are you may decide that the Northwest section is your favorite area. You won't be alone, as this is the most popular area in Bakersfield. Its convenience to shopping, parks, and some of the best schools is a big reason for this.  It has been experiencing a lot of growth, both residential and commercial. Bakersfield's Northwestern area borders on the west to Highway 5, to the south by the Kern River, to the east by Hwy 99, and ends in the north at Seventh Standard Rd. The homes in this part of town are relatively new. At one time, it was a more rural area, and only had a handful of established farming communities such as  Greenacres, Rosedale and Fruitvale . The majority of growth in this area started after the 1990's. And when it grew, it really grew!

Custom home builders including Barbara Smith, Gaskill, David Turner, John Dovichi, Dave Packer, Froelich, and John Balfanz have all contributed to the many fine communities in the Northwest.  While home prices vary greatly, this is probably not the part of Bakersfield that an inexpensive starter home will be easy to find. What you will find are upscale, move-up homes, some fine private homes located on the Riverlakes Golf Course with their own man-made lake, and finally the most exclusive luxury homes of Stonebrook Estates, Iron Oak Estates, and Legacy Estates.

Rarely we will see a fourplex or rental home for sale, although they are in high demand and will command the highest rentals due to a red-hot rental market and the desirability of the area.  If you find such a property in the Bakersfield MLS, it will usually go quickly and at a premium price point. The reasons for this area's popularity are almost too many to mention. Aside from a well-known excellent Heart Hospital located here, you will also find a whopping SEVENTEEN parks and recreation areas!  Some have softball and baseball diamonds; basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, and a public pool at the Greenacres Park and Community Center.

The Northwest Area's schools have the best reputation, and this attracts many family buyers concerned with their kids having the best education. Insect Lore's "Bugseum" adds to the educational charm of the Northwest. It is located in the city of Shafter, about 15 minutes north, and is a kid-friendly museum with a huge collection of butterflies and insects from all over the world.

Retirement Communities

There are two very popular retirement communities here. The Brighton Parks gated community offers active adult living at its finest; including a Recreation center with swimming pool and spa, billiards and gamerooms, an fitness center, and all within a beautiful park-like setting.

Glenwood Gardens is a private retirement center offering independent and assisted living with nursing care. Though not offering sales, this center offers a wonderful convenience to the Northwest area's residents who have aging parents or grandparent who need extra care or nursing home facilities.

Shopping:

The majority of shopping in the northwest is located at the Promenade, Stores include Target, Bestbuy, Walmart, Pier 1 Imports, Kohl's, Cost Plus and Michael's to name a few.

Lush is a specialty home and clothing store. The French Market is a specialty home store offering furniture, home décor and gifts. The Good Stuff is a popular second-hand store with constantly changing inventory. We also have Specialty nurseries like Majestic Palms which not only carries plants, but also gardening décor, pottery and much more.

Restaurants:

Northwest has plenty to choose from when you are looking for something to eat. Some of the restaurants include:

Frugatti's, delicious italian food.
Famous Dave's if you like barbeque.
Benji's serves Basque food.
Roadhouse Grill is great for kids.
