The downtown Bakersfield area is the central part of the city; bordered by the Kern River, Brundage Lane, Union Avenue, and Highway 99 to the west. The downtown area has five major parks - Beale Park, Jastro and Beach Parks, Central Park at Mill Creek (for WIFI access) and Lowell Park are all part of the downtown area's amenities. Bakersfield High School has been around since 1937, and boasts alumni like Congressman Kevin McCarthy. Even Merle Haggard attended the school from time to time.

Other attractions to this community include the Bakersfield Ice Sports Center, with public ice skating and ice hockey. An Olympic sized public swimming pool can be enjoyed at the McMurtrey Aquatic Center, and the Bakersfield Racquet Club offers 11 lighted tennis courts, two pools, and a fitness center. We have a modern Amtrak station, and many impressive buildings such as the Fox Theatre and the Padre Hotel. Visitors won't want to miss a trip to the Kern County Museum as well.
